Tempe, also referred to
as Oidba in Pima, is the seventh largest city in the state of Arizona,
behind the state capital Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa, Glendale, Scottsdale and
Chandler . Tempe has a population of one hundred and fifty eight thousand
residents. Credit
for the name Tempe is given to Darrel Duppa, who also named Arizona and
Phoenix. America West Airlines have their headquarters in Tempe, Arizona.
Tempe is bordered to the west by Guadalupe and Phoenix, to the south by
Chandler, north by Scottsdale and to the east by Mesa.
Here are a few
demographics for the city of Tempe; 33,645 families live in the city,
77.51% of the population are White, 17.95% are Hispanic or Latino, 4.75%
are of Asian origin, 3.66% are African American, 2.01% are Native American
and 0.29% Pacific Islander. The percentage of the population that is below
the poverty line is 14.3% and of the 33,645
families, 7.5% are below the poverty line. Tempe has got a man made lake
in the northern part of the city. It's known as Tempe Town Lake and the
length is close to two miles, on two hundred and twenty four acres of
land, with a maximum depth of nineteen inches. The third largest
University in the United States Arizona State University (ASU) Makes use
of Tempe Town Lake for the rowing teams practice. The city celebrated the
fourth of July at Tempe Town Lake. The Lake is also made use of by;
boating and fishing. |
