Indianapolis with a
population of slightly above seven hundred and eighty thousand residents,
is the largest city in the state of Indiana and was chosen as the state
capital in 1825. T he city is in the county seat of Marion.
Indianapolis is situated in the middle of Indiana on the western part of
the White River. The cities name is a combination of Indiana and the Greek
word for city "Polis." Indianapolis was established as a city in 1832.
Here are a few demographics on Indianapolis; 69.09% of the population are
European American, 25.50% are African American, 3.92% are Hispanic or
Latino, 1.43% are of Asian origin, 0.25% are Native American and 0.04%
Pacific Islander.
Indianapolis is a rich agricultural city with a major
grain and livestock market. The cities economy is driven by the following
industries; food processing, electronics and pharmaceuticals. You cannot
talk about Indianapolis without mentioning the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway, which is home to a few of the worlds most famous races. First
and foremost it is the home race for one of the countries most important
races the Indianapolis 500, which is held each year on Memorial Day
weekend.
The other races that are featured in the city are; NASCAR
Brickyard 400 stock and the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix.
Indianapolis has two of the four United States major sports franchises;
Indianapolis Colts (National Football League) and Indiana Pacers (National
Basketball Association). The other sports fr anchises
based in the city are; the Indiana Fever (Women's National Basketball
Association) and the Indianapolis Indians (Minor League Baseball). The
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has it's headquarters in
Indianapolis. Due to the number of fans that are in attendance at the
Indianapolis 500 and the NASCAR Brickyard 400, which is about three
hundred thousand, the two are ranked as the largest yearly single day
sports events in the world. Indianapolis has some of the best hotels and
