The Houston Texans were founded in 1999 as the 32nd NFL franchise team in the National Football League, they began play in 2002. The Houston Texans are one of four teams that play in the South Division of the American Football Conference (AFC). The team's uniform consists of the color steel blue, battle red, and liberty white. The helmet design is a blue(helmet) with a bull head in the red, white, and blue colors of the Texas flag. The Texans are owned by businessman Robert McNair, and the general manager is Charley Casserly.

The franchise selected its team name in September 2000. On March 2, 2000, the team announced five choices, the Apollos, Bobcats, Stallions, Texans and Wildcatters. The list was then shaved to the Apollos, Stallions and Texans a month later. After careful deliberation, the team unveiled the Texans' name, colors, and logo at a rally held in downtown Houston on September 6, 2000.In June 1998, the NFL Stadium Committee made a visit to Houston to see the plans for a new retractable roof stadium.

Nine months later, the league voted 29-2 to give Los Angeles six months to work out a feasible ownership plan and stadium situation. If the city could not do so, then the NFL would recommend Houston as the 32nd franchise. The NFL accepted Houston’s proposal for a team after a competing bid from Los Angeles, California, fell apart in 1999.

The Texans take over from the Houston Oilers, who moved to Tennessee in 1997, and became the Tennessee Titans. The Texans are one of four members of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. In early 2001 Houston hired Dom Capers, former defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, as its first head coach. Capers was also the first head coach of the Carolina Panthers, who joined the NFL in 1995.In 2002, the Houston Texans first season saw the team beat their established National Football League (NFC)in-state rival Dallas Cowboys,19-10,in their first regular season game at the state-of-the-art Reliant Stadium.

It marked the first time that an expansion club won their opening game since Minnesota defeated Chicago in 1961. In 2003, they became the first team to ever win its first two season openers by beating the Miami Dolphins. However, although the Texans were the host team for Super Bowl XXXVIII, they finished with a losing record (5-11) and did not even make the playoffs. In 2004, the Texans could not pull themselves back into the game as they were unable to do three in a row, losing to San Diego in their season opener. The Texans current stars are former University of Virginia line backer JamieSharper, Andre Johnson, Domanick Davis, quarter back David Carr, and Keith Wright. Keith Wright was born in 1982, and has grown amdist hardship and at one time was a inhabitant of the now infamous Arizona Boys Ranch in Tucson. Wright was chosen by the Texans as the final pick of the sixth round, but instead he chose to sign a contract worth $925,000 for the seasons from 2003 to 2005.Texans who are not to be forgotten are Tony Boselli,Aaron Glenn,Jabbar Gaffney and Billy Miller. The home stadium of the Houston Texans is Reliant Stadium, which was opened in 2002.
