jaguars history

The Jacksonville Jaguars are a National Football League team based in Jacksonville, Florida. The Jaguars are one of four teams based in the South Division of the American Football Conference (AFC). The Jaguars name was selected through a fan contest. Finalists for the name included the Sharks, Stingrays and even Panthers, but Jaguars was ultimately selected on December 6, 1991. On November 30, 1993,Jacksonville was awarded a National Football League (NFl) franchise, the team would be the 30th NFL franchise and the one of the first teams to be added into the NFL in twenty years.

The Jaguars would go on to play their first-ever game in Canton, Ohio in the annual American Football conference (AFC)-National Football Conference (NFC) Hall of Fame Game. They would face the NFL's other expansion franchise, the Carolina Panthers, who beat the Jaguars 20-14, and took the victory that day. The Jacksonville Jaguars would then begin season play in 1995.Their first season was an impressive one, making a 4-12 inaugural season record, which was one win better than the NFL's previous best for an expansion team

In 1996, the young Jacksonville Jaguars stunned the sports world by not only making the playoffs, but also reaching the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship game before losing 20-6 to the New England Patriots. In the same year wide receivers Keenan McCardell and Jimmy Smith each compiled 1,000 or more yards receiving.Jacksonville advanced to the playoffs again in 1997 but lost in the first round to the Denver Broncos. In 1998 Brunell and rookie running back Fred Taylor led the team to a 11-5 win-loss record and the Central Division championship.

In December, the Jaguars won the American Football Conference (AFC) Central Division and became the first NFL expansion team to make the playoffs three times in its first four seasons of play. They defeated the New England Patriots in the first round of the playoffs before being bested by the New York Jets.In 1999 Jacksonville repeated as Central Division champions but lost to the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship Game.

The Jaguars have quickly become one of the dominant teams in the NFL and perennial playoff participants. They have reached the American Football Conference Championship game twice in 1996 and 1999.The Jaguars current stars are Deon Grant,Byron Leftwich,Jimmy Smith,Marcus Stroud and Fred Taylor. Stars not to be forgotten are Tony Boselli,Tony Brackens,Mark Brunell,Mike Hollis, Keenan McCardell, Natron Means, Hardy Nickerson and coach Tom Coughlin. The Jaguars have made it into the playoffs four times (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999) since it began play in 1995. The team's uniform consists of the colors Dark teal, Black, and Gold; the helmet design is a snarling jaguar head. The Jacksonville Jaguars play their home games in Alltel Stadium (Opened Aug. 18, 1995), which was known as Jacksonville Municipal Stadium in 1995-97, and has a seating capacity of 73,000.
