The Pittsburgh Steelers is a professional football team and one of four teams in the North Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) of the National Football League (NFL).The Pitsburgh Pirates was founded in 1933 by Art Rooney.The team was named after Pittsburghs baseball team.Losing seven consecutive seasons Art Rooney changed the name of the team to Pittsburgh Steelers in 1940. The pitsburgh steelers home stadium is Heinz Field.The teams name came about due to the abundance of steel industries in the city.Byron White nicknamed wheezer due to his speed was signed by Art Rooney in 1938 and led the the league in rushing that year.Pitsburgh Steelers registered three winning records from 1942 to 1949.In 1946, Hall of famer bill dudley led the NFL in rushing, interceptions, and punt returns.

In the fifties the Pitsburgh Steelers failed to produce a winning record for seven years.In the 70's the Pitsburgh Steelers became the first team to win four Super Bowls.Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Famers quarterback Terry Bradshaw, defensive end “Mean” Joe Greene, running back Franco Harris, and linebackers Jack Ham and Jack Lambert were commanded by head coach Chuck Noll.Terry Bradshaw was the first player selected in the 1970 NFL draft, he eventually went on to became the premier quarterback in the NFL.Bradshaw led the Pitsburgh Steelers to eight American Football Conference Central championships and the unprecedented collection of Super Bowl rings.

He was named the Most Valuable Player in both Super Bowl XIII (35-31 over the Dallas Cowboys) and Super Bowl XIV (31-19 over the Los Angeles Rams).The defense,known as the Steel Curtain because it closed tight on opposing offenses, featured Jack Ham and Jack Lambert; defensive backs Mel Blount and Donnie Shell; and linemen Joe Greene, L. C. Greenwood, and Dwight White.

Pittsburgh fielded the AFC’s top-rated defense for three consecutive seasons, from 1974 to 1976.Art Rooney the club founder died in 1988, having owned the Steelers for 55 year.His son Daniel M. Rooney took over and became franchise president.The pitsburgh Steelers team colours are black and gold. The design on the helmet is Solid black on the left side. The team logo, appearing only on the right side, says "Steelers" and is based on the old U.S. Steel logo. The diamonds in the logo are officially known as "hypocycloids". In 2002, the leagues realignment plan took effect, relocating the Pitsburgh Steelers to the north division from the central division.The Pittsburgh Steelers won four League Championships in 1974, 1975, 1978 and 1979.
