The city of Oakland was founded in 1852 and is situated on the east side of San Francisco in the northern part of California State. The port of Oakland is a major shipping port on America's West Coast. Oakland has a population of about four hundred thousand residents making it the eighth largest city in the state of California behind, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Long Beach, Frezno and the state capital Sacramento. Oakland has several attractions available for the avid tourists.

The Museums, stadiums are all part of the cities entertainment. Here are a few places to keep you busy while traveling around the city; the Oakland Zoo, McAfee Coliseum, Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s presidential yacht, Lake Merritt, the Art Deco Paramount Theater, Chinatown, McAfee Coliseum, Jack London Square, the Oakland Museum of California, The Tribune Tower and Children's Fairyland. Here are a few demographics for the city of Oakland; Living in the city are 86,402 families. 35.66% of the population are African American, 31.29% are White, 21.89% are Hispanic or Latino, 15.23% are of Asian origin, 0.66% are Native American and 0.50% Pacific Islander. Oakland was nearly annihilated when in 1989, Loma Prieta, an earthquake damaged a major part of the city. Again in 1991 a firestorm hit the city.

The first inhabited site in Oakland was settled in 1820. By 1849, several people had been attracted to the city due to the gold rush. The ferry service to the city of San Francisco only made things better and they was an influx of people. The cities economy was again given a boost when the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was opened in the mid twentieth century.
